INTRODUCTION

In mathematics we focus on ensuring that students:

  • Develop fluent knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts in number, algebra, ratio and proportion, statistics and probability, and geometry
  • Acquire, select and apply mathematical techniques to solve problems
  • Reason mathematically, make deductions and inferences, and draw conclusions
  • Comprehend, interpret and communicate mathematical information in a variety of forms appropriate to the information and context

Equipment

All students are expected to bring a pen, pencil, ruler and rubber in order to be prepared for learning.

KS3

Five-year scheme of learning

To ensure that all students are taught at the right starting point and that they continue in their learning and enjoyment of mathematics, we use a five year curriculum that follows a ‘stage not age’ approach.

In year 7, students start by being taught in form groups, following a “mastery” style scheme of learning to embed the processes and understanding of all topics.

In year 8, students are set mainly according to results from assessments at the end of year 7. They continue with the mastery scheme of learning, covering all Key Stage 3 topics at least once, in depth, during the two years.

Assessing Progress

Students are assessed throughout the term using independent tasks and then in a module test at the end.

KS4

In year 9, we continue to focus on the skills students need. In year 10 and 11 there is particular focus on developing exam technique alongside teaching and learning to ensure that students can confidently apply their understanding of mathematics.

EDEXCEL GCSE Maths 1MA1 9-1

Assessment:

Paper 1 – Non calculator, 1 hour 30 minutes

Paper 2 – Calculator, 1 hour 30 minutes

Paper 3 – Calculator, 1 hour 30 minutes

Assessing Progress

Tracking assessments will continue throughout year 10 and 11 at least half-termly, and take the form of tests and practise examinations. There will be formal mock examination periods during year 10 and year 11.

ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Every year approximately 20 year 11 students go to London on a PiXL “Strive for Five” trip.

Some year 11 students have also been attending enrichment lessons at Sir Issac Newton school.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES LINKED TO THIS SUBJECT

Some careers directly require maths, for example engineering, finance, and construction. Maths is an essential part of owning your own business in any area.

With the new 1-9 G.C.S.E, we are finding a grade 6 is the minimum requirement most schools require to do Science A-Level. Therefore, any career that needs science needs maths too!
